Monocle|Lower East Side on the Rise
My Syrian great grandparents came from Aleppo to the Lower East Side (when they arrived to Ellis Island, authorities changed their name around a bit from Missrie to Mazria). The LES holds a special place in my heart. My grandfather's first home was on Essex Street. Nearby Katz's Deli WWII slogan ("Send a salami to your boy in the army") was one his most memorable.
All of that brings me to this story. Joel Mesler and several other dynamic people have worked to create a thriving gallery district in the heart of the LES (see the piece below).
And here is a picture of me with my grandfather. I was 12 at the time. Standing in the background is my father. This was the opening party for Paper Chase Press when it moved from Fairfax to Hollywood, circa 1989.
